Just ten years ago Dyer Island, off the coast of Gansbaai, had over 40 individual white sharks swimming around the island daily, making Gansbaai known as the Great White Shark capital of the world. Yet these numbers have drastically dwindled in the past few years, including an entire year without a great white shark sighting.

On October 22nd, 2021, Dewet Du Toit became the first person to swim 7.7 km (4.8 miles), to Dyer Island and back, bringing national attention to the loss of this iconic species in this area.
